Latvia: “Hollow” – Dons

Starting off this year’s Eurovision coverage at the bottom of our list of personal favorites, we have Latvia (sorry). Through their televised national final, Supernova, Latvia chose Dons and his song “Hollow.” Dons will be performing 9th in the second semi-final.

Like last year with Aija’s entry “Sudden Lights,”  Latvia does not seem to be jumping on any popular trends with Eurovision. But what can we say? They can’t do better than 2022’s “Eat Your Salad” (if you know, you know 😸). Unfortunately this year, Latvia’s national song contest did not supply much in the way of competition with Dons – except for maybe Katrīna Gupalo’s bizarre “Cat’s Song” entry.

Back to Dons: occasionally, Eurovision entries delve into a genre that can only be described as “…country?” and this is one of those. The music video features many Dons look-alikes being sad among piles of gravel. Will they bring clones and tons of gravel to the stage in Sweden? Probably not, but it’s a cool thought.

While this song adds some nice variety to the entries in a year that is mostly pop, it is just not our cup of tea. And since this year has so many excellent entries, and as there are limited spots in the Final, we won’t be rooting for this one.
