Through an internal selection process, Australia chose Electric Fields and their song “One Milkali (One Blood).” Electric Fields will be performing 13th in the first semi final. For the first time in its Eurovision history, Australia is incorporating some Aboriginal culture into their song with a didgeridoo and the key word in the title: Milkali (meaning blood in the Yankunytjatjara language).
Electric Fields is a duo comprised of Zaachariaha Fielding and Michael Ross. Notably, they created the official theme song for WorldPride 2023 when it was held in Sydney. Electric Fields also placed 2nd in Australia’s national final to decide its 2018 Eurovision entry, so we know that they can perform well. And they’ve also collaborated with one of our Eurovision favorites, Keiino from Norway 2019.
[DISCLAIMER: U does enjoy this song and ranks it significantly higher than C. Given how much the music video impacted our experience of the song, our ranking for this particular entry may drastically change after the stage performance in the semifinal.]
WARNING: The music video is an uncomfortable thing to watch – it’s fine, totally fine, just un-comfy. The duo stare shirtless into the camera and slowly move to the music while the lyrics appear around them. Partway through they astrally project themselves to share a platonic kiss.
This is an internally selected song, so we don’t have a performance to go off of, just the music video. And unfortunately the experience of watching the music video has created a distinctly unpleasant association with the song. We look forward to seeing what they do on the Eurovision stage.
