United Kingdom: “Dizzy” – Olly Alexander

The United Kingdom, who hosted the contest last year on behalf of Ukraine, chose “Dizzy” by Olly Alexander through an internal selection process. As part of the Big Five countries, the UK’s entry will automatically qualify for the final. Although he already has a spot in the final, Olly Alexander will be performing right after Ireland (was this intentional EBU?) in the first semifinal (performing 4.5th).

“Dizzy” is one of the most radio-friendly pop songs this year and is performed by an established British artist, who is known for being the lead singer of the band Years & Years and has even performed a duet with Elton John. While “Dizzy” does not add much in the way of ✨Eurovision✨ to this year’s contest, it is a very catchy, easy listening, chill bop. The chorus of this song was one of the first to get stuck in our heads this year, so it’s definitely an ear worm.

The music video certainly takes the song title seriously with many rotating parts that make even the viewer dizzy. We are curious and excited to see what the UK production design team comes up with for Olly’s stage. Will he perform on a large and rotating platform? We hope so. It has been done before (like Germany’s 2019 sister act, though they didn’t actually bring the rotating stage from their national final performance to Eurovision, and then they got zero points in the televote, so maybe not an aspirational example). However, we would be excited to see “Dizzy” performed on a cool rotating stage!

While this song is pleasant and catchy, there is not really a powerful moment we can pinpoint that will blow the audience away. On top of that, the UK does not have a history of selecting artists who can perform their (usually quite good in their studio version) songs on stage to their full potential (with the exception being the incredible Sam Ryder who may have won under different political circumstances in 2022). Hopefully, Olly Alexander will be able to pull this song off with solid vocals, energy, and a stage presence.
