Greece: “Zari” – Marina Satti

Greece chose Marina Satti’s song “Zari” through an internal selection process. Marina Satti will be performing 3rd in the second semifinal.

The music video is a fantastic satire of foreign tourists’ visits to Greece with frenetic cuts and video overlays. It feels very post-post-modern and Gen Z, and it is unlike any other official Eurovision music video we have seen. Ever. So that’s kinda cool. Both the song and the music video feel very Greek, and it’s always lovely to see a country send in a song that is unique to its identity.

Screenshots from the music video of “Zari” seem like they are pulled straight from social media posts.

Like its music video, “Zari” does a lot and includes many different sounds. To use a K-pop term, this song definitely fits in the mix pop subgenre, which blends many different, often discordant styles of music into one song. As a style this can be divisive. The many sounds can register as a jumble that lacks cohesion and melody, alternatively it can create a unique and fresh sound.

We only have the music video to go off of for Marina Satti’s performance since she has not performed at any pre-parties or other televised live events, so her performing ability and stage presence are still unknowns. “Zari” loosely resembles the other female pop entries this year from Mediterranean countries like Cyprus and Malta. However, this song is doing a lot more (maybe too much) and there is a chance for the visuals to really set it apart. In a televised song contest, the distinct sound and memorable visuals will help distinguish this entry from the others.
