Luxembourg: “Fighter” – Tali

Luxembourg chose Tali with her song “Fighter” through the Luxembourg Song Contest to represent them at Eurovision. Tali will perform 15th in the first semifinal – the coveted closing act spot.

It has been 30 years since Luxembourg has opted to participate in Eurovision, and they’ve returned with a bang! Firstly, their televised national song contest back in January put some established national final competitions to shame (looking at you, Malta and San Marino) – even including an interval act by Norwegian Eurovision superstar, Alexander Rybak! There were a total of 8 songs competing, all solidly performed and staged. And while we didn’t follow the national final too closely, we think Tali would have been our choice as well.

We would also just like to take a moment to acknowledge Tali’s flawless eye makeup.

This song is yet another female solo pop performance, and yet there’s just a few things that (in our opinion) clearly set it apart from the rest and make it an incredibly satisfying entry. The melodies in the chorus, sung in both French and English, contain series of catchy and repetitive ascending and descending notes. We don’t know music terms, and we have tried to find a way to describe how the chorus makes us feel, but the most accurate thing we can say is: it makes our brains go brrr.

We really like this song, and it would be lovely for Luxembourg to advance to the final after their thirty-year absence. However, we are not totally convinced that Tali can sing live without relying heavily on backing vocals. And, of the girl pop artists, she is the one who seems the least capable of dancing. (Sorry!) We know she can sway to the beat while her backup dancers carry a lot of weight, but there is room for some more choreography (i.e. the classic Slow Strut) that would enhance the staging without needing to add a whole dance break. We are cautiously optimistic, and hope that Luxembourg has been using the last 4 months to polish this performance to perfection.
