29. United Kingdom: “What The Hell Just Happened?” – Remember Monday

The United Kingdom internally selected the trio, Remember Monday, and their song “What The Hell Just Happened?” As one of the Big Five, the UK does not need to qualify which means Remember Monday is guaranteed a spot in the final.

What can we say? This song certainly is theatrical, but it is also all over the place with many different melodies and styles during the 3 minutes. On first listen, C found this song’s many contrasting genres to be jarring and off-putting. To her, it sounded like Remember Monday had submitted 4 songs to Eurovision, and decided to splice them together. What the hell just happened? With so many options, there are – of course – aspects of the song that we enjoy.  The bit at 0:50 when they introduce the rock music with the “1, 2 – 1, 2, 3!” is really fun.

Somehow with a song that has so many different parts, the chorus that they use to stitch together the different melodies is repetitive and grating. The only lyric in the whole chorus is just the title of the song repeated over and over: “What. The. Hell. Just. Happened.” (Seriously, just singing the title is one full minute of the three minute song).

While we are typically fans of genre-bending, genre-defying art in all kinds of forms, this one lacks some of the cohesion needed to make it fully listenable. We really just kind of think that they could have kept to maybe 2 genres instead of 4.

However, part of the reason we have ranked this song as highly as this (not so high position) is its potential to really come alive on stage if the staging is done right (something the UK has been very hit or miss about in recent years). The three members of the group all have a musical theater background which shows through in the song and is an excellent sign for their live performance. It leads us to believe that Remember Monday are solid live performers and in the music video, it is clear they at least have facial expressions down. The all-over-the-place song does make the staging essential and risky. Will the staging hold together and elevate a messy song or will the messy song lead to messy staging resulting in just a big mess? We will have to wait and see what the hell will happen.
