19. Luxembourg: “La Poupée Monte le Son”- Laura Thorn

Continuing their system from last year, Luxembourg selected Laura Thorn’s “La Poupée Monte le Son” through their national final. Laura will perform 13th in the second semifinal.

With an earworm of a chorus (na na na na na na), this entry is a catchy pop song that is well performed. The doll and puppet motif in the lyrics easily transfers to the stage performance, which is completed by a costume change and back-up dancers. There is a lot of interesting visual potential with this theme. Also, this is another one of the entries in French this year!

Part of what makes this entry cool is its inspiration and response to Luxembourg’s 1965 winning song “Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son” in a 60 year callback. The 1965 song uses the metaphor of the singer being a wax or rag doll that wishes to experience the love of a boy but can only achieve that through music. Meanwhile, Laura Thorn’s “La poupée monte le son” is a warning to boys who see her as a doll, telling them that she is the one in control of the music.

Other happenings of note during the Luxembourgish song contest: There was a song entitled “I Dance” that had minimal dancing. There was also a really cute on-air proposal facilitated by the iconic Conchita Wurst (winner of Eurovision 2015). Conchita was there as one of the the contest’s hosts and performed the show’s opening act. We feel very sorry for all of the contestants that had to sing to an audience who had just heard “Rise Like A Phoenix” performed live.
