20. Poland: “Gaja” – Justyna Steczkowska

In their absurdly strong national final that has had such a glow up from the 2023 fiasco, Poland selected Justyna Steczkowska’s song “Gaja.” Justyna will perform 2nd in the first semifinal.

This is not Justyna’s first time at Eurovision. She performed on the big stage 30 years ago in 1995 with “Sama”. However, we greatly prefer her entry this year. (Also, she does not look at all like she’s aged thirty years. If anything, has she aged backwards?)

“Gaja” is something in Eurovision that is affectionately called a “disaster bop.” There is SO much going on in the song and on stage at any time. First of all, we are amazed that the 52-year old Justyna pulls off what we consider some of the most physically demanding choreography this year in a black latex jumpsuit and high heels that involves excessive amounts of spinning, a fake violin, getting flown into the air by her wrists all while belting out powerful long notes. And that is just what Justyna is doing herself.

Another entry that flies!

There are also shirtless back-up dancers who are also wearing heels while lifting her up and spinning and at one point they have giant flags? Plus there is some other kind of random guy with a more believable violin who provides additional background vocals. This is all extraordinary Eurovision and we love it.

Poland is not known for simple or subtle staging and sometimes ruins more standard entries with really questionable staging and post production graphics (looking at you Ochman’s River). “Gaja,” however, flourishes in its excess and Justyna is an absolute queen to pull this performance off.

AND, in the last 24 hours, Justyna posted this new music video, which showcases just that.
