Once again selecting their entry through the Benidorm Fest national final, Spain chose Melody’s “Esa Diva.” As one of the big five countries, Melody is guaranteed a spot in the Grand Final.
This entry blends generic pop with a uniquely Spanish flavor – and Melody has the diva stage presence to make it fun to watch and the vocals to pull it off. We were all wowed by her ability to dance, emote and belt out incredibly impressive notes throughout this powerhouse of a song. She exemplifies the titular Diva as described in the lyrics, “A diva is brave, powerful… She rises once again, dancing / With more strength than a hurricane.” And Eurovision does love its female empowerment anthems.

Melody came very close to representing Spain at Eurovision in 2009 when she tied for 1st place in the national selection. However, the tie-break went to her competitor. Sixteen years later, she is finally getting her chance to represent Spain!
Spain’s Benidorm Fest is always one of our favorite nationals to watch. This year, Melody rose to the top of a very talented group. “Esa Diva” narrowly beat out a song entitled “Uh Nana” by Daniela Blasco. Some other of our favorites from this year included J Kbello’s “V.I.P.” and Lachispa’s “Hartita de llorar.”
But the real tragedy of this year’s Benidorm season is that the bizarrely provocative “La pena” by DeTeresa did not even make it past the national semi final, despite coming 3rd in the public vote. We will never know what could have happened if DeTeresa’s sexy soccer boys with sporty thongs and giant bull with glowing red eyes had made it to Eurovision.
