7. Iceland: “Róa” – VÆB

After ending as finalists last year, the brothers Væb finally emerged victorious from Iceland’s national final Söngvakeppnin with their song “Róa.”  Væb performed first in the first semifinal, and will perform 10th in the Grand Final on Saturday.

“Róa” is a rousing melody about rowing a boat. It’s also a party song full of energy and good væbs ;) Remember when sea shanties were everywhere on the internet during that one month in the pandemic? Pretty sure you can draw a straight line from that trend to this song.

Væb is a musical duo of Icelandic brothers named Hálfdán and Matthías. They competed in Iceland’s national song contest last year with the song “Bíómynd.” This year, they returned with the same shiny silver outfits and blinged sunglasses, but with a very different sound. With this Gen Z sea shanty, Hálfdán and Matthías have propelled themselves all the way to Eurovision’s Grand Final – all in the hopes that they will reach 100k YouTube subscribers by the end of May. Truly, these lovely, hilarious brothers just want to be YouTubers and play Minecraft. And they must be protected at all costs #VæbGang

Regardless, we love the song, and we love Væb’s charisma and humor. And we like that Iceland is sending a song in Icelandic as well.

Here, Hálfdán and Matthías use very professional graphics to show that every time Iceland has sent a song in Icelandic it has qualified for the Grand Final.

Here’s a clip of them covering the most iconic song from the Eurovision movie:
