25. Cyprus: “Shh” – Theo Evan

Cyprus internally selected Cypriot Theo Evan’s song “Shh.” Theo Evan will be performing last in the first semifinal.

This is the first time since 2017 that Cyprus has been represented by a Cypriot performer. In previous years, they have been represented by two Australians, four Greeks and one German.

Theo Evan is a singer and dancer who has released a number of songs that we looked up prior to “Shh” being released. We think that his Eurovision entry is definitely an improvement over the far too literal subject matter of his previous songs. It does seem that Theo Evan’s aesthetic is very zumba instructor. Do with that what you will.

The music video for “Shh” is very intriguing, and we have a lot of questions about what it means. What is the game that they are playing? What is with all of the black morph suits? Is it a cult? Is Theo their prisoner or their leader? What is the black box? How did the black box suddenly get bigger? And why is it on fire?

The lyrics are perhaps even more convoluted. One prevailing theory is that the song refers to the Greek myth of Adonis, the ideal of male beauty, who had many complicated lovers and relationships – even in the context of the olympic pantheon. For an entry from Cyprus, the Greek myth angle certainly makes more sense than the Rumplestiltskin one that is also touted online.

Whatever the meaning, this song is a fun time, and we know that the performance will be too. Just how well this song does will be really dependent on staging and if Theo Evan can pull it off live.
