14. Estonia: “Espresso Macchiato” – Tommy Cash

In a landslide win, Tommy Cash won Estonia’s national final Eesti Laul with his song “Espresso Macchiato.” Tommy Cash will be performing fourth in the first semifinal.

Below we’ve included both the Estonian National Final performance of “Espresso Macchiato” and its Official Music Video, because they are both worth watching, and because we want to spread this earworm far and wide.

Now, we do not know what Estonia’s thing is for Italy, because this is not the first time they have sent a song in Italian – most recently in 2018, they sent the incredible “La Forza” by Elina Nechayeva. And the year before that, Estonia sent a song in English titled “Verona” by Koit Toome and Laura

That being said, the Italian in Tommy Cash’s “Espresso Macchiato” is maybe not the most accurate, as exemplified by the lyrics: “No stresso, no stresso / No need to be depresso.”

This is one of the entries this year that has generated the most buzz. (If you have 43 minutes to spare and you want to watch an in-depth video essay about it, you can head to Overthinking It on YouTube for their incredibly well-researched deep dive on Tommy Cash.)

The song is an ode to coffee, an ode to stereotypically Italian things, and an ode to the very concept of a Eurovision joke entry. It is undeniably silly, very catchy, and stupidly easy to sing along to after just one listen.

Equally silly is the fantastic staging of Tommy Cash dancing with five burly security guards. Tommy’s wibbly-wobbly knees are more reminiscent of SpongeBob than of human anatomy. Clearly, neither of them have bones.

Finally, though the lyrics of “Espresso Macchiato” are absurd and campy, there is one that gets us every time:

Life is like spaghetti
It’s hard until you make it

– Tommy Cash

And we think that’s beautiful <3
